As part of this project, we are building bridges between the healthcare, pharmaceutical and water technology sectors, and are working with SMEs in the Northern Netherlands to develop innovative solutions to reduce pharmaceutical residues in water.
The project aims to boost the economic potential of the northern Netherlands, whilst at the same time working towards tangible social impact. We do this by connecting those facing these challenges with start-ups and SMEs that can develop and implement innovative solutions.
Together with our partners, we are building a strong regional ecosystem in which businesses, healthcare providers, researchers and policymakers work together to develop practical solutions. In doing so, we focus on:
Promoting the development and upscaling of new technologies that effectively remove pharmaceutical residues from water, with a focus on sustainability and economic added value
Developing innovative methods for the production of medicines and raw materials, as well as methods of administration
Creating innovative software applications for both patients and prescribing professionals, such as GPs and pharmacists
The project will run until mid-2027 and has the following objectives:
Connecting at least 30 companies within the northern ecosystem.
Developing at least 10 proof-of-concepts for new technologies or services.
Achieving a 10% reduction in the most harmful pharmaceutical residues in surface water within five years.
Promoting sustainable medication use, including through innovations in treatment adherence.
Strengthening the innovation ecosystem in the Northern Netherlands through a robust legal and organisational structure.
The role of the LIFE Cooperative is to develop cleaner, more sustainable methods of medicine production and smart delivery systems for medicines, in order to reduce environmental impact. Innovations from start-ups and SMEs are developed and implemented, and linked to those facing the challenges. We aim to realise 10 proof-of-concepts or business cases with our members. Members working on a technology or innovative process that can make a difference in reducing pharmaceutical residues in the natural environment or surface water can take advantage of funding opportunities within this project.
